Swim Safe With Tracy

On Tuesday, Tracy came to teach about swimming safely. We wondered what this section was about.
Most of us already knew how to swim. Tracy said the adults are know dying, trying to save the children.
We learn to use Channel 16 in emergencies. We staged a play too of what to do in emergencies.
I was a surfer and I saved Vanya. Here is my Swim Safe DLO.

Learning About Takeaways With Whaea Gina

Yesterday, Whaea Gina was teaching us about how much oil and fat are in takeaway foods like Mcdonalds, KFC and Carl’s Jr. Did you know Carl’s Jr is the most unhealthiest restaurant in New Zealand? There are fourteen teaspoons of oils with each burger and chips! Sushi has the least oil with only ¾ of a teaspoon. The most surprising one for me was fish and chips. There is 9 ½ teaspoons with every piece of fish and a scoop of chips. The purpose of this is to teach kids about what they are putting into their bodies and if it is healthy or not.

Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori

This week, our school has been celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori by playing games, listening to cool stories and singing songs so we can keep Te Reo Māori alive in New Zealand. We have been celebrating this on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with 3 new rotations each day. We all missed one rotation because there were ten. I had fun learning about Te Reo Māori. I learnt heaps about Māori names for months of the year. We did this in our house groups. I was in Kowhāi.

Level 5 Complements Test

A few weeks ago, Te Ngahere made a complements slide based on what level you are at maths. Level one is just addiction up to ten (3 + _=10). Level two is addition to one hundred (14 + __=100) . Level 3 is decimals to ten (5.2 + __=10). Level 4 is addition to one thousand (385 + ___=1000). Level 5 is addiction to 10 with two decimal places. (8.24 + ___=10). My test is level 5. We had to answer them under 4 seconds. I think i did a good job answering the questions but writing them down took awhile. Enjoy and good luck!

How Much Sugar Is In Your Fizzy Drink?

On Monday 30th of July, Te Ngahere has been learning how much sugar is in common drinks we drink often. We had to decide if it was something you should drink everyday, sometimes or occasionally. Did you know that e2 has 24 teaspoons of sugar in a 750ml bottle? That’s heaps of sugar people are drinking. The daily intake of sugar is 6 teaspoons of sugar for girls and 9 teaspoons for boys. That means you would be drinking more than enough sugar.

Algebra

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, we have been working on Algebra. Algebra is a type of maths when you replace certain numbers with letters in equations. We had to fill in the missing numbers in patterns and find out the rule. I found it quite confusing that we had to write the answers separately from the questions. Here is my answers down below.

Rat Traps - Inquiry - Bay Bush Action

As part of our inquiry this term we have been given some  rat traps by Bay Bush Action. We check the traps everyday Last week, we checked the rat traps Brad and Stella gave us and we got a rat and a mice. Each trap has a number and we use this to log our catch onto a website. Our goal is to become the first pest-free school in New Zealand. Here are the photos down below.

Kereru Presentation - Panui

For the past two weeks in Te Ngahere, we were studying about native and endemic animals and plants to New Zealand.  WALT make connections between what we already know and what we read. My partner and I chose Kereru. We had to include a bunch of important questions to add such as where it lives, what it eats, threats, interesting facts, why we should protect it and what job it does in the ngahere. We could also choose a couple of questions we wanted to find out about  too. I think we did well gathering our information and paragraphing it into our own words. Here’s our presentation down below.

Bay Bush Action

Last week in Te Ngahere, Stella and Brad from Bay Bush Action came to our class to talk to us about Native birds and animals, a topic we were studying about in our Panui. They gave us stuffed possums to pass around. Brad had a brilliant idea to give our school 10 mice traps to become to first mice-free school in New Zealand. One of the pupil from our school, Lennix, a member of Bay Bush Action was in charge of checking the mice traps. He chooses a boy and a girl to help them everyday. Here are a couple photos.

Descriptive Writing - Moment In Time

Last week in Te Ngahere, we have been doing descriptive writing about Te Ngahere.  WALT  use the correct structure to describe a moment in time. After we write everything down, we chose a learning buddy to check our writing. I think I did well at choosing descriptive and specific language. This is my first draft, enjoy!

Beautiful leaves hang off light green branches of a Ponga Tree. Sunlight pierces through small gaps within the thick bushy leaves. The forest floor, overflowing with light brown leaves, softly crackling each step. Birds sing their unique, dazzling song, blessing your ears. Little skinks scampering around, trying to bend with the leaves. A dense and rough oak tree stood aside you. It’s branches appeared as if they could reach the heavens. The smell of damp bark lurks around your nostrils. Little rain droplets balance upon thin strips of grass.

The mystical forest on a forever stretch, shedding its beauty.

Explanation Writing - Healthy Ecosystems

For the past term, Te Ngahere has been working on our healthy ecosystem explanation. Our WALT use the correct structure to write an explanation. We had to explain what is a healthy ecosystem and what is within it. What helped me in my learning was checking over my work.  I thought it fun when I had to explain what are producers, consumers, decomposer and inorganic and organic matter. What I found hard was understanding what the teacher was asking me to do. I think I did a really good job and I am very happy with my final product.

My Animation

For the past 2 weeks in Te Ngahere, we have been learning about food chains and we were told to make a animation about a food chain that we had checked with our teachers. In a food chain there are producers, consumers, decomposers, and inorganic matter. I was working with Fonz. We had trouble filming because we couldn’t stop laughing. I think we did OK when it came to explaining how it works. I could probulary speak more clearly next time. Enjoy!

Rocky Shore

Last term, Te Ngahere and Nga Motu went down into town to look at what lives in the rocky shores. WALT identify and discuss elements of and impacts on the marine ecosystem. We had to buddy up with one of the teina. We found a big crab, tiny crabs, little starfish, shrimp and hermit crabs.

Kaitiakitanga o te Moana

Ever since week 7, Te Ngahere have been working on Kaitiakitanga o te Moana, our reading project.
Our WALT was to focus on creating something to share our learning.
I think I did alright, mostly because I was using better language than my everyday vocabulary and
my cooperation with my class was better. I enjoyed cooperating with my group and helping them.
I need to work more on my grammar.

My Finished Metaphor Poem

For the past week in Te Ngahere, we have been working on our best, elaborated copy of our metaphor poems. WALT  use language features appropriately showing a developing understanding of effect. I mostly worked on finding words to make my poem more interesting and exciting to read. I really like my finished copy. I found it hard finding new and better words. I hope you like my new and improved metaphor poem.

Our Draft Metaphor Poem

For the past couple days, Te Ngahere has been learning to use metaphors in our writing to describe ourselves. We could describe ourselves about anything but we had to have one or two reasons why we were that so the reader wouldn’t misinterpret what we were trying to say. I enjoyed comparing myself to things that I like and thinking about a reason why I thought that we were alike. I struggled with ideas at one point. Next time, I think I should work on putting more detail into my writing to make it more interesting, This is my first draft.

Saffyre is ...

Saffyre is a lion cub, small and vicious

Saffyre is a pineapple, wears a crown and sweet on the inside

Saffyre is a teacher, inspiring and helping others

Saffyre is a role model, helping and inspiring our school tukana

Toku Pepeha T1 2018

For the following weeks, Te Ngahere have been working on our visual pepeha. The purpose of this was to introduce ourselves and our whanau and so our language can live on. I enjoyed remembering and rehearsing my pepeha and presenting it. What I found hard was pronouncing it and remembering it without help. Overall, I really enjoyed this activity.
